Will Homeowners Insurance Cover Dog Bite Injuries?
As a general rule, a homeowners insurance policy will cover injuries and losses suffered as a result of a dog bite. The same principle typically applies to renter’s insurance policies. There are exceptions, however, so you’ll need an experienced attorney to obtain a copy of the insurance policy and determine if there are exclusions:
- Some insurance companies do not provide coverage for attacks or bites by certain breeds of dogs, or in situations where the dog has a history of aggressive behavior
- Some insurance policies specify that dog bite coverage will be determined on a case-by-case basis
In addition, some policies may state specific limits of liability for certain types of claims, including dog bites. If your damages exceed those limits of liability, your primary or sole recourse for remaining damages may be against the homeowner or possessor of the dog.
